West Virginia’s 4th Branch of Government

“We have encountered no other state that insulated its education system so much from gubernatorial — or voter — control.”

It seems there is a growing awareness of this little kingdom we call the WV State Board of Education.  They have adopted educational transforming standards without public hearings or legislative involvement.  They are preparing to implement online computer adaptive assessments this spring that will be the key data collection point on students.  The student data will be stored in a massive student longitudinal data system to which WV has agreed to allow access by the federal government…a federal government that has decided it can share student data without parental consent.

The WV BOE is a bureaucracy out of control and unaccountable to the people that fund them, and now they seek to gain even more control as explained in this very informative article by the Charleston Daily Mail reporter, Don Surber.

I don’t understand why the public is not up in arms regarding the “authority” that the WVDE has clothed itself in. Are we just allowing them to take our rights and our children’s rights?
